From September 30 to October 3, the Lutherie and Science Workshop was held at the Gandia Campus of the Universitat Politècnica de València, a practical and interdisciplinary activity that combines acoustics, physics, and the art of musical instrument making.
The workshop was led by luthier Llorenç Fenollosa, professor at the Valencia Conservatory of Music (CSMV), and by research professor Rubén Picó, from the Gandia Campus of the UPV. It was attended by students, musicians, and people interested in the relationship between science and music.

During three sessions, participants were able to experiment with the vibrations of the wooden plates of string instruments during the different stages of the construction process: from rectangular boards to curved soundboards. Acoustic measurement and vibration mode visualization techniques were used, combining traditional luthiery methods with instruments from the UPV’s acoustics laboratories, such as loudspeakers, microphones, and stroboscopes.
The activity resulted from collaboration between the CSMV and the UPV, and is part of an initiative that seeks to bring scientific knowledge closer to musical creation while promoting the dissemination of science through artistic experience. The workshop also provided an opportunity to connect university research with musical craftsmanship, fostering dialogue between the empirical knowledge of luthiers and the rigorous analysis of acoustic phenomena.
