Explore the Deep Blue

14 October, 2026

From 6 to 22 October, the Gandia Campus of the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) invites you to discover the extraordinary biodiversity of seas and oceans through the exhibition“Explore the Deep Blue”. This photographic exhibition brings together a selection of images showcasing marine flora and fauna.

The exhibition will be open to visitors from 6 to 22 October in the Exhibition Hall of the UPV Gandia Campus (Building 1G, ground floor).

The Mediterranean: A Heritage Waiting to Be Discovered

With a special focus on the species inhabiting the Mediterranean Sea, the exhibition aims to highlight the natural richness of our coasts, emphasizing their ecological, cultural, social, and economic importance.

“Our goal is to bring the public closer to the incredible biodiversity hosted by marine ecosystems while raising awareness of the importance of their conservation,” explains Víctor Gallego, UPV researcher and project coordinator.

In addition to showcasing marine biodiversity, “Explore the Deep Blue“ highlights the oceanographic research carried out by UPV researchers.

“UPV has a long-standing research tradition in aquatic ecosystems, with a wide range of research lines focused on understanding and conserving the marine environment.”

Exhibition Team

Víctor Gallego, a biologist from Valencia, began his research career in the UPV Aquaculture and Biodiversity Group, where he completed his PhD while participating in several research projects related to the conservation of aquatic species. Following postdoctoral appointments at various international research centers and universities in Japan, the United Kingdom, Brazil, and Portugal, he returned to UPV through a prestigious Ramón y Cajal excellence fellowship. He currently conducts research and teaching activities focused on biodiversity conservation. Throughout his career, he has participated in numerous environmental education and citizen science programs, gaining extensive experience in marine fauna surveys, scientific bird ringing, and monitoring protected marine areas.

Raquel Torres, an environmental scientist from Murcia, has developed much of her research career in Portugal, where she completed a Master’s Degree in Marine Biology at the University of Algarve. She has collaborated on various research projects related to biodiversity conservation, carrying out extensive surveys of marine flora and fauna. Her current research focuses on cultivating a red seaweed species capable of dramatically reducing methane emissions from ruminant livestock, thereby helping to mitigate environmental impacts and providing innovative solutions to combat climate change. She has also volunteered with the Association of Naturalists of the Southeast (ANSE) on several nature conservation and environmental education initiatives.

The exhibition hosted by the Gandia Campus is one of the projects selected under the PC_ACTS 2026 call, a program that promotes cultural and scientific outreach activities. Furthermore, the initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14: Life Below Water, by encouraging biodiversity conservation and enhancing appreciation of the natural heritage represented by aquatic ecosystems.
