Port of Gandia, the Powerhouse Behind a Knowledge-Based Economy

The port of Gandia as a major driver of opportunity and a powerhouse for the Safor region. The latest edition of the Regional Economy Forum, the itinerant event organized by the Levante-EMV in the Valencian geography, focused on this premise in order to analyze the two most important components of progress: economy and geographic territory.

On this occasion, the newspaper invited institutional, economic and social stakeholders to participate in the forum “Port of Gandia, a unique enclave as a major driver of society”. The event, which was held at Campus Gandia of the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV), featured presentations by Miguel Ángel Picornell, Councillor for Port and Maritime District of the Gandia City Council; Carmen García Vilar, head of Land Management at the Valencia Port Authority; Luis Rodríguez de Rivera, Vice President of the Safor Federation of Business Associations (FAES) and Miguel Rodilla, Research Professor at Campus Gandia of the UPV.

Transformation of the Port of Gandia

“The port of Gandia is the first energy self-sufficient port in Europe  thanks to the installation of the photovoltaic plant for self-consumption,” said Picornell. This initiative is part of Valenciaport’s goal to achieve zero emissions by 2030.

For the head of Land Management at the Valencia Port Authority, “the port of Gandia has been integrated in exemplary fashion.” In addition, “the port and the environment are undergoing a major transformation”, adding that “we are working to make the space accessible to visits, for public use, without overlooking the fishing activity, which is very significant in the port of Gandia.”

For his part, Rodríguez de Rivera pointed out that “the port of Gandia is a unique enclave as major driver of society,” its impact on Gandia and the region is “indisputable”.

National Epicenter for Oceanographic Research

The port of Gandia is also a “port of knowledge“. And, in this regard, the announcement of the creation of a new research center, which will profit from the successful track record of the Joint Unit in Technology for Marine Studies (UTEM) between the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO) and the Campus of Gandia of the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV), will be a boost to scientific research. Likewise, “it will generate an increase in economic activity and provide benefits to the environment,” according to Rodilla.

The new building will house fifty research and technical personnel, and will turn the port into a national reference point for oceanographic research, strengthening the research and studies being carried out by Campus Gandia of the UPV . Construction is scheduled to begin in 2024, and the building is expected to be operational in 2025.
