{"id":9584,"date":"2019-04-03T10:11:16","date_gmt":"2019-04-03T08:11:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/?p=9584"},"modified":"2019-04-03T10:13:00","modified_gmt":"2019-04-03T08:13:00","slug":"gandia-hospital-and-campus-gandia-of-the-upv-design-a-system-for-studying-facial-paralysis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/en\/2019\/04\/gandia-hospital-and-campus-gandia-of-the-upv-design-a-system-for-studying-facial-paralysis\/","title":{"rendered":"Gandia Hospital and Campus Gandia of the UPV Design a System for Studying Facial Paralysis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Medical personnel from the Rehabilitation Department of the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/gandia.san.gva.es\/hospital\">Francesc de Borja Hospital<\/a><\/strong> and researcher form <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.upv.es\/contenidos\/CGANDIA\/index-en.html\">Campus Gandia of the Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Valencia (UPV)<\/a><\/strong> are working on a computer project to conduct an objective assessment that more accurately diagnoses <strong>asymmetrical facial movement patterns (synkinesis) resulting from paralysis.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The purpose of this system, which is based on the use of new information and communication technology and artificial vision techniques, is to <strong>conduct a measurable objective assessment of the facial features and asymmetries during paralysis and monitor its progress with precision<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9567\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9567\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9567\" src=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/gandia-parafacial.jpg\" alt=\"Gandia Parafacial\" width=\"640\" height=\"369\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/gandia-parafacial.jpg 640w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/gandia-parafacial-434x250.jpg 434w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/gandia-parafacial-150x86.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9567\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Parafacial System<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In addition, it provides a <strong>computer tool that automates the programming and monitoring of rehabilitation exercises<\/strong> by the patient, both in the hospital and at home.<\/p>\n<p>To do this, computer devices are used to guide each patient in a user-friendly and controlled way as they do the exercises (even checking and recording whether the exercises are being done properly), instead of paper-based exercise sheets.<\/p>\n<p>The applications will automatically save the exercise data in a database for subsequent analysis by the medical professional, as well as to analyze the patient&#8217;s progress throughout the treatment. With this, the project will also improve the efficacy of botulinum toxin infiltration in the treatment of <strong>synkinesis<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This is one of projects selected by the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.polisabio.es\/index.php\/es\/\">Polisabio<\/a><\/strong> partnership program and developed by the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/fisabio.san.gva.es\/inicio\">Fisabio Foundation<\/a><\/strong> and the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/fisabio.san.gva.es\/inicio\">UPV<\/a><\/strong>. The objective of this program is to connect healthcare professionals with academic researchers to undertake innovation projects such as this, which already has 3,000 euros of funding for preparatory actions.<\/p>\n<p>Taking part in the project are <strong>Rosa Mu\u00f1oz, Modesto Alca\u00f1iz, Blanca Zafrilla, Reyes Bononad<\/strong> and <strong>Miguel Salmer\u00f3n<\/strong>, from the Rehabilitation Department of the Hospital de Gandia; <strong>Ana Coloma<\/strong>, from the Rehabilitation Department of the <strong>Requena Hospital<\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.upv.es\/pls\/oalu\/sic_person.Info?p_alias=fboronat&amp;P_IDIOMA=i\">Fernando Boronat<\/a> <\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.upv.es\/pls\/oalu\/sic_person.Info?p_alias=cpalau&amp;P_IDIOMA=i\">Carlos Palau<\/a><\/strong>, researchers from the UPV Gandia and Valencia Campuses, respectively.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rosa Mu\u00f1oz, Modesto Alca\u00f1iz and Blanca Zafrilla<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\"><\/div>\n<p>OBJECTIVE ASSESSMENT<\/p>\n<p>The system proposes an improved and more innovative approach to an objective assessment in the consultation itself, or even in the patient&#8217;s own home, which helps the doctor design a therapeutic program through personalized exercises, and to also control and treat possible complications that may arise.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, this system will allow for accurate and objective automatic measurement; an analysis of progress; the possibility of <strong>prescribing more personalized treatments, optimizing resources<\/strong>, and a user-friendly graphic application with an easy-to-use and intuitive interface, so that even unqualified personnel can perform the assessment, increasing its generalized use and reducing its cost.<\/p>\n<p>The system will make it possible to <strong>reduce the number of patient visits to the doctor<\/strong> and physiotherapy sessions in the hospital, as well as facilitate at-home compliance with the prescribed personalized therapeutic plan.<\/p>\n<p>It will also permit more precise infiltration of <strong>botulinum toxin<\/strong>, with better-adjusted doses that will improve the therapeutic outcomes and decrease the number of re-infiltrations, with the subsequent
