{"id":9389,"date":"2019-03-06T09:33:17","date_gmt":"2019-03-06T08:33:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/?p=9389"},"modified":"2019-03-06T09:30:01","modified_gmt":"2019-03-06T08:30:01","slug":"sherezade-ortiz-villajos-it-was-a-true-reality-check-studying-environmental-sciences-at-campus-gandia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/en\/2019\/03\/sherezade-ortiz-villajos-it-was-a-true-reality-check-studying-environmental-sciences-at-campus-gandia\/","title":{"rendered":"Sherezade Ortiz-Villajos: &#8220;It was a true reality check studying Environmental Sciences at Campus Gandia&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While I was in high school I had a <strong>keen interest in science<\/strong>, and that&#8217;s probably why my education turned more to that branch of studies, and I finally ended up the <strong>degree of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.upv.es\/titulaciones\/GCIA\/index-en.html\">Environmental Sciences at Campus of Gandia<\/a><\/strong>. It was a true <strong>reality-check<\/strong> to study that degree, where I realized two things: first, that <strong>climate change is a reality that we can see it in our day to day<\/strong>; second, and more worrisome, that there is a<strong> lack of awareness among the population<\/strong>, which compounds the first premise.<\/p>\n<p>It was at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.upv.es\/contenidos\/CGANDIA\/index-en.html\">Campus Gandia<\/a> that I got the first opportunity to do research through my<strong> Final Degree Project<\/strong>, and to work on something that could be useful for the environment. It was under the supervision of one of the biology professors, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.upv.es\/pls\/oalu\/sic_person.Info?p_alias=pallotti&amp;P_IDIOMA=i\"><b>Claudia Pallotti<\/b><\/a>, who showed me a very interesting project with <strong>legumes<\/strong>. This plant family is of great value at many different levels, but they are also able to<strong> bind nitrogen in the soil, thus improving the soil properties<\/strong>. In addition, this compound gives rise to <strong>tropospheric ozone<\/strong>, which is harmful to human health and is a greenhouse gas.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9363\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9363\" style=\"width: 1359px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9363\" src=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/fotos.jpg\" alt=\"Nodulaci\u00f3n observada en leguminosas y bacterias encontradas en los n\u00f3dulos.\" width=\"1369\" height=\"603\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/fotos.jpg 1369w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/fotos-568x250.jpg 568w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/fotos-768x338.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/fotos-1135x500.jpg 1135w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/fotos-150x66.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1369px) 100vw, 1369px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9363\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nodulation observed in legumes (left) and bacteria found in the nodules.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Thus, this line of research led us to develop a<strong> method of isolating the soil bacteria<\/strong> that, when the enter into symbiosis with the legumes, nodulate in the roots and promote the binding of this gas in the soil.<\/p>\n<p>However, when I finished the research, and thanks to other researchers who welcomed me during my project, I wanted to go further. This is how I ended up doing the <strong><a class=\"banner_txt_otros\" title=\"Master's Degree in Plant Molecular and Cellular Biotechnology\" href=\"https:\/\/www.upv.es\/titulaciones\/MUBMCP\/indexi.html\">Master&#8217;s Degree in Plant Molecular and Cellular Biotechnology<\/a><\/strong>, offered by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upv.es\/index-en.html\"><strong>UPV<\/strong><\/a> in association with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.csic.es\/home\"><strong>Higher Council of Scientific Research (CSIC)<\/strong><\/a>, in the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ibmcp.csic.es\/en\">Institute of Molecular and Cellular Biology of Plants (IBMCP)<\/a><\/strong>. There science is taken as a way of life, and the projects that are carried out are authentic works of molecular engineering.<\/p>\n<p>In my case, and being consequential with my environmental education, I decided to focus on <strong>the resistance of plants to climate change<\/strong>. Therefore, we studied the genes related to the growth of the stems and were involved with a group of proteins whose synthesis is affected by several aspects, such as the environmental conditions of the plant. Therefore, we were able to generate some lines of <strong>mutant plants<\/strong> that resulted in an interesting phenotype, since they were <strong>plants that grew despite being subjected to environmental stresses<\/strong>. This was an interesting finding, since plants tend to stop growth in favor of defense when there are adverse conditions.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9366\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9366\" style=\"width: 642px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-9366\" src=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/sherezade-ortiz-villajos-campus-de-gandia-upv.png\" alt=\"Sherezade Ortiz-Villajos Cano\" width=\"652\" height=\"488\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/sherezade-ortiz-villajos-campus-de-gandia-upv.png 771w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/sherezade-ortiz-villajos-campus-de-gandia-upv-334x250.png 334w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/sherezade-ortiz-villajos-campus-de-gandia-upv-768x575.png 768w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/sherezade-ortiz-villajos-campus-de-gandia-upv-668x500.png 668w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/sherezade-ortiz-villajos-campus-de-gandia-upv-150x112.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 652px) 100vw, 652px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9366\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Initial experiments for characterization.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But the research didn&#8217;t stop there, since I created what is called a &#8220;<strong>control line&#8221;<\/strong>, which helped to see which regions our candidate gene was expressed in, by means of microscopy techniques.<\/p>\n<p>These findings are very important, since, despite having carried out studies in model plants (<em>Arabidopsis thaliana<\/em>), it opens the door to future research with plants of agronomic interest. That is to say, <strong>we could achieve plants that would able to withstand long periods of drough<\/strong>t, a frequent problem in our territory and which will unfortunately increase due to the new prestigious institutions at the regional and national levels<\/strong>; and I hope to continue contributing my grain of salt and get my doctorate in a field related to biology and the
