Improving the qualities of fabrics to favor their noise-absorption capacity; developing techniques for the control and study of marine species without interfering with the environment; real-time monitoring of bone regeneration in dental implantology; creating new systems for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases; increasing the detection capabilities of cosmic neutrinos from astronomical sources… these are the scientific contributions carried out in the five research projects backed by Campus Gandia of the Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Val\u00e8ncia, that took home awards in the 2018 edition of the<\/strong> Tecniac\u00fastica Conference<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Tecniac\u00fastica Conference is organized by the Spanish Acoustic Society (SEA)<\/a><\/strong>, the leading association in Spain for scientific work and dissemination in the field of acoustics.\u00a0<\/strong>On this occasion, the conference was held jointly with the FIA \u200b\u200b2018: XI Ibero-American Acoustics Conference.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sergio Jim\u00e9nez Gamb\u00edn, Josep Rodr\u00edguez Sendra,\u00a0D\u00eddac Diego Tortosa,\u00a0<\/em>Roberto Ati\u00e9nzar and Andr\u00e9s Morillo<\/em><\/p>\n

The acoustics research staff at Campus Gandia has received successive prizes in the different editions of Tecniac\u00fastica<\/a>, but has broken its own record<\/strong> this time, obtaining five awards for the work carried out by the young researchers. Algunos de los colaboradores de los trabajos premiados fueron, curiosamente, reconocidos a su vez por la SEA cuando eran investigadores junior.\u00a0 Curiously enough, some of the team members of the prized works were previously awarded by the SEA when they were junior researchers. Many of the winners are Campus Gandia graduates, either in the Bachelor’s Degree in Telecommunications Systems Engineering Sound and Image<\/strong>, or in the Master’s Degree in Acoustic Engineering<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

ACOUSTICS FOR TEXTILE ENGINEERING<\/p>\n

Robert Ati\u00e9nzar<\/a>,\u00a0<\/strong>author of the paper “Acoustic Absorption of New Textile Fabrics”<\/strong> (\u201cAbsorci\u00f3n Ac\u00fastica de Nuevos Tejidos Textiles\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/a>, in Spanish), obtained one of the two Andr\u00e9s Lara Awards<\/strong> for young researchers granted this year by the SEA. The research has been carried out alongside\u00a0Romina del Rey, Rub\u00e9n Pic\u00f3 and Jaime Gisbert Pay\u00e1.<\/strong> As Robert Ati\u00e9nzar explains, “the use of acoustic textiles is increasing due to the appearance of greater areas of application and new technological advances. Recently the modification of the fibers has been proposed to obtain new textiles with improved acoustic properties using microcapsules.\u00a0The objective of this work was to compare the influence of microcapsules on textile fabrics and estimate their properties as sound absorbers.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

Andr\u00e9s Morillo and Roberto Ati\u00e9nzar<\/em><\/p>\n

ACOUSTICS FOR THE PROTECTION OF MARINE BIODIVERSITY<\/p>\n

Andr\u00e9s Morillo<\/a><\/strong> is the other winner of the Andr\u00e9s Lara Award for Young Researchers<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/strong>His study<\/a> was supervised by Isabel P\u00e9rez-Arjona, V\u00edctor Espinosa, Susana Llorens, Vicent Puig and Miguel Rodilla.<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to \u00c1ndr\u00e9s Morillo, the Mediterranean Sea has been a source of fishing resources for coastal populations for hundreds of years<\/strong>. In recent decades the populations of bivalves, more specifically the Chamelea gallina<\/em> venus clams, has seen a pronounced decrease in the number of individuals that compose them.\u00a0This work proposes cheap and non-invasive acoustic studies to identify and quantify the venus clam populations of the Mediterranean Sea<\/strong> in order to carry out protection studies to help to establish policies for sustainable fishing.”<\/p>\n

ACOUSTICS FOR BIOMEDICINE<\/p>\n

Josep Rodr\u00edguez Sendra<\/a><\/strong> won the second prize of the Andr\u00e9s Lara Award<\/a><\/strong> for developing a method to monitor the bone cement curing process through ultrasonic backscatter analysis<\/strong>. The work was carried out jointly with No\u00e9 Jim\u00e9nez, Francisco Camarena and Rub\u00e9n Pic\u00f3 and Joan Faus,<\/strong> Doctor in Dentistry.<\/p>\n

Sergio Jim\u00e9nez Gamb\u00edn<\/a><\/strong> won the UC3M Luis de Camoens Chair Award<\/a><\/strong> for the study “Effects of the Method for Obtaining the Acoustic Properties of Human Skull in the Focused Ultrasound Propagation”. This work develops a line of research by doctors Francisco Camarena and No\u00e9 Jim\u00e9nez<\/strong>, to combine focused ultrasound and micro-bubbles for local, transient, non-invasive and safe treatment of neurodegenerative diseases.<\/p>\n

ACOUSTICS FOR RESEARCH OF THE UNIVERS<\/p>\n

D\u00eddac Diego Tortosa<\/a><\/strong> also won the second prize of the Andr\u00e9s Lara Award<\/a><\/strong> for a work in which different methods of signal processing<\/strong> are presented in order to optimize the acoustic detection of the acoustic positioning system of the KM3NeT neutrino telescope<\/strong>. The work develops a line of research by UPV researchers Miguel Ardid and Juan Antonio Mart\u00ednez Mora<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
