Researchers from the<strong> Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Val\u00e8ncia (UPV) and the Technical University of Dresden (Germany) <\/strong>have <a href=\"https:\/\/ieeexplore.ieee.org\/document\/8364061\">developed a smart pillow prototype<\/a> whose purpose is precisely to improve the diagnosis of these pathologies, reduce their incidence and and improve the quality of life of its users.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The pillow incorporates sensors that accurately monitor human parameters such as <strong>body temperature, sweating or body movement<\/strong>s, as well as record information about room lighting, noise or other sounds.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We studied which was the best location inside the pillow for each sensor. In addition, we created the code and the algorithms necessary for the correct functioning of the system.\u00a0<strong>The pillow is able to forward the gathered information through the domestic WiFi network to a medical database<\/strong>, in order to improve the diagnosis of possible disorders,&#8221; says\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.upv.es\/pls\/oalu\/sic_person.Info?p_alias=jlloret&amp;P_IDIOMA=i\"><strong>Jaime Lloret<\/strong><\/a>, researcher of the<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/igic.webs.upv.es\/\"> IGIC at the Campus Gandia of the UPV.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8552\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8552\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8552\" src=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/jaime_lloret-456x250.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"351\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/jaime_lloret-456x250.png 456w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/jaime_lloret.png 768w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/jaime_lloret-150x82.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8552\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jaime Lloret<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>APPLICATIONS<\/p>\n<p>According to the researchers, the prototype is designed for two types of applications: the first is <strong>the improvement of sleep quality for people without specific sleep disorders<\/strong>. &#8220;In this case, the main advantage of the system is the interconnection of the different elements found in the home that are able to adapt the environment based on the data gathered so as to achieve a better sleep &#8211; lower the blinds, adjust the room temperature, etc.,&#8221; says Jaime Lloret.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The second application is aimed at patients with sleep disorders that have not yet been diagnosed<\/strong>. With this smart pillow, data about the behavior of each individual can be collected over one or more nights &#8220;In this case, the domotic part would not be activated.\u00a0\u00a0The data will later be analyzed by medical personnel to gather more information about the possible problems experienced during the night and be able to make a diagnosis or request more hospital tests,&#8221; concludes IGIC researcher,\u00a0<strong>Lorena Parra<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8547\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8547\" style=\"width: 590px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8547\" src=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Lorena-parra-web-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"412\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Lorena-parra-web-1.jpg 640w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Lorena-parra-web-1-364x250.jpg 364w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Lorena-parra-web-1-150x103.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8547\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lorena Parra<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>AVOIDING SNORING<\/p>\n<p>The system also incorporates a method to avoid snoring.\u00a0<strong>When there is a high level of noise, a small speaker is activated above the bed that emits a sound that is very similar to the flight of a mosquito<\/strong>. &#8220;It is proven that this causes the person to move and thus to stop snoring.
