This is what a team of researchers from <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.upv.es\/contenidos\/CGANDIA\/index-en.html\">Campus Gandia<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iislafe.es\/en\/\">IIS La Fe<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0 have achieved through development a prototype electronic nose that is capable of detecting patients with <strong>Crohn&#8217;s disease and ulcerative colitis<\/strong>.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The device, called\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/CampusGandiaUPV\/multi-sensory-odor-olfactory-system\"><strong>Moosy 32 eNose<\/strong><\/a>, also detects whether or not the disease is active, with an <strong>accuracy of close to 90%<\/strong>. \u00a0According to the researchers, &#8220;in the future, this type of equipment may be available in Gastrointestinal consultations to determine the patient&#8217;s condition through <strong>a simple stool analysis that can be performed in three minutes<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>NON-INVASIVE DETECTION<\/p>\n<p>At present, invasive tests are frequently performed to diagnose and assess the inflammatory activity of colon pathologies, such as Crohn&#8217;s disease and ulcerative colitis, both considered Inflammatory Intestinal Diseases (IID).With the prototype developed, the team from the UPV and the IIS La Fe wants to contribute to the<strong> generation of non-invasive diagnostic systems<\/strong>. It is estimated that <strong>some 200,000 people suffer from the disease in Spain and it continues to rise at a rate of nearly 3% annually<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6984\" src=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/nariz-electronica-campus-de-gandia-upv-la-fe-hospital-841x500.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"386\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/nariz-electronica-campus-de-gandia-upv-la-fe-hospital-841x500.jpg 841w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/nariz-electronica-campus-de-gandia-upv-la-fe-hospital-421x250.jpg 421w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/nariz-electronica-campus-de-gandia-upv-la-fe-hospital-768x457.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/nariz-electronica-campus-de-gandia-upv-la-fe-hospital-150x89.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The nose conceived by the Valencian researchers can detect volatile organic compounds and these act as <strong>diagnostic markers or of the intensity of the activity of the disease<\/strong>. &#8220;The volatile organic components are originated by physiological processes of the metabolism in the human body and are expelled as waste through the stools.\u00a0The concentration of these components can serve as a differential marker in certain intestinal diseases. Their precise detection through non-invasive devices such as the electronic nose will be a<strong> great advance in the detection and monitoring of the evolution of these diseases<\/strong>,&#8221; says Dr. <strong>Pilar Nos<\/strong>, Head of the Gastrointestinal Medicine Department at La Fe Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers have carried out tests with 445 samples and have obtained <strong>satisfactory results<\/strong>. \u201cThe research findings are positive. However, we need to continue working to improve the detection algorithms,&#8221; adds\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.upv.es\/pls\/oalu\/sic_person.Info?p_alias=jpelegri&amp;P_IDIOMA=i\"><strong>Jos\u00e9 Pelegr\u00ed<\/strong><\/a>, member of the Sensor and Magnetism Group of the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/igic.webs.upv.es\/\">IGIC<\/a> <\/strong>(for its Spanish initials), or the <strong>Campus Gandia Research Institute<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Development of this prototype has been funded by the <strong>Generalitat Valenciana<\/strong>.\u00a0In addition, the initial part of the project &#8211; the feasibility study that served to lay the foundations for the system &#8211; was financed by <a href=\"http:\/\/inbio.es\/\"><strong>Inbio<\/strong><\/a>, the scientific collaboration structure between the UPV and La Fe.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: 1px solid #CCC; border-width: 1px; margin-bottom: 5px; max-width: 100%;\" src=\"\/\/www.slideshare.net\/slideshow\/embed_code\/key\/sHH8BKcUv8ZWBB\" width=\"595\" height=\"485\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"> <\/iframe><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 5px;\"><em> <a title=\"Multi sensory odor olfactory system\" href=\"\/\/www.slideshare.net\/CampusGandiaUPV\/multi-sensory-odor-olfactory-system\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Multi sensory odor olfactory system<\/a>\u00a0|\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/CampusGandiaUPV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Campus Gandia &#8211; UPV<\/a><\/em><\/div>\n<p>In addition to Dr. Pilar Nos and Professor Jos\u00e9 Pelegr\u00ed, <strong>Dr. Bel\u00e9n Beltr\u00e1n<\/strong>, head of the research laboratory at the <strong>Health Research Institute and Hospital La Fe<\/strong> and <strong>Llu\u00eds Torse<\/strong>, nurse in the medical part of the project, project and <strong>Enric Climent, Juan Talens and Tom\u00e1s Sogorb<\/strong>, representing the IGIC, have taken part in the project.<\/p>\n<p>OTHER APPLICATIONS OF THE ELECTRONIC NOSE<\/p>\n<p>The system is being tested for other medical applications, such as the <strong>detection of prostate cancer<\/strong>. Studies are also being carried out, with satisfactory results, for the detection of<strong> microbial contamination in water, or the degree of fruit ripeness<\/strong>, with important applications for
