On September 29th, for the first time ever the city of Valencia celebrated the “European Researcher’s Night<\/a><\/strong>“, a project promoted by the European Commission<\/strong> that aims to showcase the most human side of scientific research<\/strong>. In the case of Valencia, the local organization also wanted the celebration to raise social consciousness, therefore a total of 30 female researchers<\/strong> went on stage to talk about their careers and to share their experience.<\/p>\n

Almost half of these female researchers belong to the Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Val\u00e8ncia<\/strong>. They are Chelo Cuquerella<\/a>,\u00a0Nuria Rodr\u00edguez<\/a>,\u00a0Purificaci\u00f3n Garc\u00eda<\/a>,\u00a0Bego\u00f1a Fuentes<\/a>,\u00a0Tanja Vos<\/a>,\u00a0Lidia Contreras<\/a>,\u00a0Mar\u00eda Vargas<\/a>,\u00a0Inma Oliver,<\/a>\u00a0Melani Lleonart<\/a>,<\/a>\u00a0Sabina Asensio<\/a>,\u00a0Nuria Pascual<\/a>,\u00a0Maite Sebasti\u00e1<\/a>,\u00a0Isabel Gasch<\/a> and Mar\u00eda Amparo Baviera<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“WE ARE BEGINNING TO SEE A CHANGE”<\/p>\n

In her speech, Dr. Maite Sebasti\u00e1<\/strong>, research professor at Campus Gandia,<\/strong> stressed that the university has traditionally been “an eminently masculine world”<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/strong>And she told a very significant anecdote about it: “When I defended my doctoral dissertation, a fellow candidate, ironically, pointed out how little parity<\/strong> there was in my defense committee. A defense committee made up of five men<\/strong>.”<\/p>\n

However, Sebasti\u00e1 thinks that we are beginning to see a change. “When I joined the UPV faculty, our campus was headed by Manuela Fern\u00e1ndez <\/a><\/strong>(director of the Campus Gandia from 2004 to 2008). And today, for the first time, another woman, Amparo L\u00f3pez Jim\u00e9nez,<\/a><\/strong> is heading my department, Hydraulic and Environmental Engineering<\/strong>. This shows us that yes we can, and the only limits are the ones that we impose on ourselves<\/strong>.”<\/p>\n

The IGIC<\/strong><\/a> research scientist also indicated the importance of research residencies abroad<\/strong>, “even if it means leaving your children at home, to go out to share what you have learned and acquire new knowledge and new ways.”<\/p>\n

ONLY 20% OF RESEARCH IS FEMALE-LED\"\"<\/p>\n

Only 20% of the top research projects in the Valencian Community are female-led. The gap in the work-life balance persists in R&D&I<\/strong>. Hence, the aim of the different organized activities was to showcase the research done by women, as well as their role in a scientific world where the male image predominates.<\/p>\n

Researchers from the Universitat de Val\u00e8ncia<\/strong> and the Higher Council for Scientific Research<\/strong> also took part in “Female Researchers’ Night”<\/strong>. At the end of the presentations, the audience was allowed to ask them questions to get a better understanding of their work.<\/p>\n

The event was also held for the first time in Alicante, Elche and Orihuela, adding to the more than 250 European cities<\/strong> that annually celebrate this event.The idea is to take science to the streets and get people involved<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
