{"id":5691,"date":"2017-03-01T10:45:03","date_gmt":"2017-03-01T09:45:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/en\/?p=5691"},"modified":"2017-03-08T13:12:56","modified_gmt":"2017-03-08T12:12:56","slug":"female-engineers-hidden-figures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/en\/2017\/03\/female-engineers-hidden-figures\/","title":{"rendered":"Female Engineers: Hidden Figures?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Science,_technology,_engineering,_and_mathematics\">STEM<\/a><\/strong> degrees (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) are increasingly in demand in a world marked by the digital revolution. <strong>Monica Bragado<\/strong>, Industrial Engineer and President of the Social Council of the <strong>Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Val\u00e8ncia<\/strong>, tells us this in the UPV documentary series, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=dt-4Q-VB3jY\">&#8220;Female Engineers: The Irreplaceable Factor&#8221;<\/a><\/strong>.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dt-4Q-VB3jY\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Yet, around the world <strong>there is a lack of interest among girls<\/strong> in these fields of study. The stereotypes associated with these careers and the<strong> lack of role models i<\/strong>n scientific and technological fields are some of the factors that determine this disparity. The <strong>University of Oviedo<\/strong> conducted a study in 2014 to gain insight into the situation. The researcher <strong>Carmen Rodriguez s<\/strong>ays in the video below:<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/14U9Wcz2ESU\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;\">But why, if there is no objective evidence that girls do worse in these subjects, why, then, do they think so? One reason could be the lack of<strong> role models<\/strong>, since access to scientific careers has been difficult for many years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;\">The recently released film, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.filmaffinity.com\/en\/film947523.html\"><strong>Hidden Figures,<\/strong> <\/a>tells the story of the African-American mathematician, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Katherine_Johnson\">Katherine Johnson<\/a><\/strong> and her colleagues, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dorothy_Vaughan\"><strong>Dorothy Vaughan<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mary_Jackson_(engineer)\"><strong>Mary Jackson<\/strong><\/a>, who helped <strong>NASA<\/strong> in the <strong>Space Race.<\/strong> Thanks to Katherine&#8217;s calculations, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Glenn\"><strong>John Glenn<\/strong> <\/a>became the first American astronaut to orbit the earth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/13-yvgodSH4\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;\">A team achieved this feat, and this appears to be the best way to meet a challenge: <strong>working together for a common goal.<\/strong> As the <strong>Kevin Costner<\/strong>&#8216;s character says in the movie, <strong>&#8220;We get to the peak together, or we don&#8217;t get there at all.&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;\">CREATING ROLE MODELS<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;\">In the commemoration of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/International_Women%27s_Day\"><strong>International Women&#8217;s Day,<\/strong><\/a> the<strong> Campus Gandia<\/strong> wants to contribute to the consolidation of female role models in STEM through the experience of its graduates, to encourage girls to choose these careers because they are fun, exciting, and because they are <strong>&#8220;girl things&#8221;<\/strong>. The panel discussion will take place on <strong>Friday, March 10, at 12:00 pm. in the Aula Magna<\/strong> with the title: <strong>&#8220;Technology: It&#8217;s a Girl Thing Too&#8221;<\/strong>, and includes graduates in Telecommunications Systems Engineering, Sound and Image from the Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Val\u00e8ncia. Admission is free and open to all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;\">The participants will include<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/ruvid.org\/wordpress\/?p=30558\">Clara Luz\u00f3n<\/a>,<\/strong> recent recipient of the ITelecos award given to the outstanding Junior collegiate for his\/her brilliant academic career; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lasprovincias.es\/deportes\/mas-deportes\/201612\/12\/cuando-paddock-algunos-rien-20161212004118-v.html\"><strong>Raquel Bartual<\/strong><\/a>, member of the technical team of the Champi Women Racing Team motorcycling team; and <a href=\"http:\/\/itelecos.es\/susanabanuelos\"><strong>Susana Ba\u00f1uelos<\/strong><\/a>, entrepreneur , technical director of the Acoustics and Energy company, Luzea and Vicepresident of AGITCV \/COGITCV (iTelecos).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>And, in the words of the renowned Spanish scientist, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Margarita_Salas\"><strong>Margarita Salas<\/strong><\/a>, in her lecture &#8220;Women and Science, My Own Experience&#8221; delivered at the Hospital Vall d&#8217;Hebron in Barcelona, \u200b\u200b&#8221;You&#8217;re not born with vocation, you create it&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2nlMCQlT58g?rel=0\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Campus Gandia of the UPV<\/strong> wants to foster vocations in science and engineering because society needs these capabilities in order to provide new solutions to old and new problems, and also because we know that they are exciting careers.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.upv.es\/pls\/oalu\/sic_person.Info?p_alias=sanbargr&amp;P_IDIOMA=i\">\u00a0<strong>Sandra Barrancos Gregori<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Communication and Marketing Officer, Gandia Campus<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>STEM degrees (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) are increasingly in demand in a world marked by the digital revolution.
