Where we were able to develop a synchronous distributed Virtual Reality (VR) environment. An environment in which two or more dentists located in different geographical points, could interact and collaborate in a <strong>virtual oral scenario in 3D<\/strong>. In this case, one of the dentists could be an online professor or supervisor giving instructions and providing relevant information, while monitoring and controlling the quality of service and experience. This is just one example of what emerging technologies and multimedia communications can offer us.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5373 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/gafas.jpg\" alt=\"gafas\" width=\"360\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/gafas.jpg 360w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/gafas-150x100.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" \/>Other particularly useful developments could be the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Augmented Reality (AR) applications to facilitate the training and operating processes<\/li>\n<li>Haptics-based interactive VR applications used for training, remote collaboration and long-distance exchange of experiences.<\/li>\n<li>Use of VR goggles for patients while they are in consultation and to treat certain phobias.<\/li>\n<li>Gesture recognition applications to prepare exercises to improve and monitor craniomandibular dysfunction.<\/li>\n<li>Inclusion of multisensory (eg. flavors) and environmental (eg. lighting) effects that produce a sense peace and calm for the patient, improving the quality of experience during their visit to the dentist.<\/li>\n<li>Video capture and processing systems, as well as conference calling, applicable to different fields of dentistry (eg. inspection, distance learning, tele-assistance&#8230;)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This and other research form part of the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.upv.es\/contenidos\/CATIVIO\/\" target=\"_blank\"> IVIO-UPV Chair&#8217;s<\/a> ambitious research and innovation project, which will be carried out by several research teams from both the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.upv.es\/contenidos\/CGANDIA\/index-en.html\" target=\"_blank\">Campus Gandia of the UPV<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ivio.es\/\" target=\"_blank\">IVIO<\/a>. The participation of students from both institutions is also expected, allowing them to join forces and share knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>ADVANCED MULTIMEDIA TECHNOLOGIES TO IMPROVE THE PATIENT EXPERIENCE<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5363\" src=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/20161129_105454-889x500.jpg\" alt=\"20161129_105454\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/20161129_105454-889x500.jpg 889w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/20161129_105454-444x250.jpg 444w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/20161129_105454-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/20161129_105454-150x84.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Under the umbrella of this research <strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/personales.upv.es\/fboronat\/Index_en.php\" target=\"_blank\">Fernando Boronat<\/a><\/strong>, Full Professor in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.upv.es\/entidades\/DC\/\" target=\"_blank\">Communications Department<\/a> and head of the <a href=\"http:\/\/iim.webs.upv.es\/\" target=\"_blank\">Immersive Interactive Media R &amp; D<\/a> group at the Campus Gandia of the UPV,\u00a0 has announced the creation of a new line that will signify &#8220;the introduction of the highest level of emerging <strong>advanced multimedia technologies<\/strong> to improve procedures related to the field of dentistry, both in practice and in training, as well as to improve the patient experience.&#8221; According Boronat, &#8220;concepts such as virtual reality, augmented reality, interactivity, immersivity or multisensoriality still appear to be oblivious to dentistry,&#8221; but, &#8220;our goal is to develop services, applications and innovative devices that allow them to be applied to everyday clinical practice,&#8221; concludes Professor.<\/p>\n<p>PROJECTS STARTING FROM 2017<\/p>\n<p>In recent years, dentistry has undergone radical changes in the treatment of oral diseases.\u00a0 According to <strong>Joan Faus<\/strong>, doctor and director of the IVIO, &#8220;the future of dentistry lies in the constant application of new technologies to <strong>improve patient care management<\/strong>.
