{"id":26821,"date":"2026-09-30T10:09:44","date_gmt":"2026-09-30T08:09:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/?p=26821"},"modified":"2026-09-30T10:13:34","modified_gmt":"2026-09-30T08:13:34","slug":"eden-blue-producing-food-with-the-sea-and-the-sun","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/en\/2026\/09\/eden-blue-producing-food-with-the-sea-and-the-sun\/","title":{"rendered":"Eden Blue: Producing Food with the Sea and the Sun"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;\u201cWhy do we continue to make food production dependent on two increasingly scarce resources, such as fresh water and fertile soil, when we have two extraordinarily abundant resources, the sea and the sun?\u201d This question is the origin of <a href=\"https:\/\/edenblueproject.com\/\">Eden Blue<\/a>, a project that seeks to integrate desalination, agriculture, and marine biotechnology into a single system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its founder, <strong>Mario Ribelles<\/strong>, a student at the Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Val\u00e8ncia (UPV), explains that the project \u201cjointly addresses problems that are usually treated separately: water scarcity, soil degradation, food production, the management of brine resulting from desalination, and the utilization of marine resources.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The proposal stems from what Ribelles calls the \u201c<strong>coastal paradox\u201d:<\/strong> many of the areas beginning to suffer from water stress are located right by the sea, surrounded by vast amounts of water that cannot be used directly for drinking or farming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The solution proposed by Eden Blue involves developing, in the long term, <strong>floating modular platforms<\/strong> capable of producing fresh water and food while simultaneously making use of the by-products generated during the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>From Desalination to Food Production<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The system would use solar energy to desalinate seawater and obtain fresh water for growing plants. The resulting brine, instead of being treated solely as waste, would be repurposed to cultivate halophilic microorganisms capable of producing high-value compounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEden Blue\u2019s innovation lies not in a single technology, but in its integration,\u201d notes Ribelles. The goal is to create a resource-use cascade in which the by-products of one process become resources for the next. And \u201cthe entire system would be monitored using sensors and IoT technology.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A First Prototype by the End of the Year<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to its founder, Eden Blue is currently \u201cbetween a proof of concept and the laboratory validation of its various components.\u201d The team has already designed the first unit for obtaining fresh water and is beginning its assembly. In parallel, they are working on an experimental protocol to compare different substrates, irrigation systems, and beneficial microorganisms within the plant module.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next step will be to conduct a first integrated bench-scale trial: producing water consistently, using it in a plant trial, and feeding the resulting real brine into a photobioreactor. \u201cWe are not looking for this first prototype to be pretty or commercial; we want it to produce reliable data,\u201d Ribelles explains. The forecast is to publicly present this prototype by the end of 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>From University Project to Real Technology Supported by Awards<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eden Blue received the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upv.es\/noticias-upv\/noticia-15694-talento-upv-es.html\">Young Talent Award of the Valencian Community in the Science category<\/a> and was selected to receive support from ARI HUB, mentored by Pilar S\u00e1nchez from the Gandia Campus (UPV). For Ribelles, these two recognitions have helped lend credibility to the project and bring it closer to the business and technological worlds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1536\" height=\"2048\" src=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Foto-premio.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26808\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, the project faces another milestone: Eden Blue has been selected as the Innovative Project of the City of Gandia 2026 and will represent the city at Innpulso Emprende.
