Despite its ecological importance, there are significant gaps in our knowledge about its distribution in Spanish waters during the autumn and winter months, a key period for its reproduction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-9-16 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Proteger al rorcual com\u00fan\" width=\"563\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dRDzDuhIyec?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the aim of <strong>improving scientific knowledge and supporting the management and conservation of this emblematic species<\/strong>, The Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Val\u00e8ncia (UPV) and the University of Seville have launched the <a href=\"https:\/\/fundacion-biodiversidad.es\/en\/proyecto_feder\/mediterranean-mysticetes-distribution-migration-and-conservation-of-fin-whales-balaenoptera-physalus-in-spanish-waters-mysticmed\/\">MYSTICMED project<\/a>, which focuses its research on <strong>three strategic areas<\/strong>: the southern part of the Balearic-Levantine demarcation, the Alboran Sea, and the Atlantic waters off Galicia. These areas represent potentially critical zones for the fin whale, but are still understudied during the non-summer seasons. The project is led by researcher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upv.es\/pls\/oalu\/sic_person.Info?p_alias=edbelpe&amp;P_IDIOMA=i\">Eduardo Belda<\/a>, an expert from the Gandia Campus (UPV) in satellite monitoring of marine species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"889\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Eduardo-889x500.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Eduardo-889x500.webp 889w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Eduardo-444x250.webp 444w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Eduardo-768x432.webp 768w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Eduardo.webp 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 889px) 100vw, 889px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project will combine <strong>advanced satellite tracking techniques, individual photo-identification, and ecological modeling<\/strong>, allowing for a more precise understanding of the species&#8217; spatial patterns and their relationship with environmental variables. It will also analyze the degree of overlap with marine protected areas and human-caused threats, such as heavy maritime traffic and the effects of climate change on the marine environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"885\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Imagen-3-885x500.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26653\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Imagen-3-885x500.webp 885w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Imagen-3-442x250.webp 442w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Imagen-3-768x434.webp 768w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Imagen-3-1536x868.webp 1536w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Imagen-3-2048x1158.webp 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 885px) 100vw, 885px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As an innovative element, MYSTICMED will implement a<strong> pilot<\/strong> <strong>automated acoustic detection<\/strong> system designed to identify the presence of fin whales in real time. This system will enable the development of <strong>early warnings<\/strong> to reduce the risk of collisions with vessels, one of the main threats to the species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"885\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Imagen-2-885x500.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26656\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Imagen-2-885x500.webp 885w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Imagen-2-442x250.webp 442w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Imagen-2-768x434.webp 768w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Imagen-2-1536x868.webp 1536w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Imagen-2-2048x1158.webp 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 885px) 100vw, 885px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe project&#8217;s results will allow us to identify <strong>critical areas for conservation, assess how climate change may alter the distribution of the fin whale, and generate key information applicable to marine management, spatial planning, and conservation strategies<\/strong>.
