In recent years, university classrooms have begun to transform. They are no longer just spaces where knowledge is transmitted, but places where people experiment, debate, and\u00a0take action. A revealing example of this evolution can be found in the work of Sandra Martorell and M. Rosario\u00a0S\u00e1ez-Salvador, who have explored how\u00a0performance\u00a0<\/strong>can become a powerful tool for educating, raising awareness, and promoting social change from within the university.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their proposal is based on a simple but profoundly transformative idea: art is not only taught, it is also lived.<\/strong> And when that experience is directed towards social problems\u2014in this case, gender-based violence\u2014the educational effect goes far beyond theory. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Artivism: when art takes to the streets to raise awareness<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Artivism, the fusion of art and activism, is not new, but it has gained renewed strength in the last decade. In the 1970s, collectives such as Guerrilla Girl and current actions such as Las Tesis’ Un violador en tu camino (A Rapist in Your Path) have demonstrated the political and communicative impact of these practices. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The work analyzed here takes up this tradition and transfers it to the educational sphere: students not only learn what feminism is or what types of violence exist, but also investigate, represent, and combat them through the body and artistic expression. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A creative process that becomes transformative learning<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over several weeks, students at the Escola d’Art i Superior de Disseny de Val\u00e8ncia follow a process that combines research, ideation, creation, and public action. It is not just about creating a performance, but about collectively understanding: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 what forms of violence women suffer, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 how they are culturally reproduced, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 and how art can open up spaces to denounce and rethink them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The methodology\u2014Arts-Based Research\u2014turns the classroom into a collective laboratory where feminist theory, design, and creativity come together. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The result: artistic actions in public spaces on November 25 that challenge those who observe them, but above all have an impact on those who perform them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Five performances to open our eyes<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the actions carried out, the following stand out: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 The Tunnel of Violence<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

An immersive installation where the audience walks through a corridor filled with sexist messages, to feel firsthand the discomfort that women experience on a daily basis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 REDise\u00f1\u00e1ndonos (Redesigning ourselves)<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A photographic mosaic that composes a new collective female face, accompanied by a haka-style performance celebrating the strength and resilience of women. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 1027<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A bride locked in an urn: each garment or inscription on her dress names a woman murdered that year. The public throws dirt on the urn, symbolizing the weight of patriarchal discourse. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Golgotha<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A symbolic Way of the Cross on the school fa\u00e7ade, where each station represents a form of gender-based violence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Desnugant la viol\u00e8ncia (Untangling Violence)<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A student surrounded by six personified forms of violence; the audience, invited to \u201cuntie\u201d these bonds, symbolizes the collective possibility of breaking the cycle. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

These actions not only denounce, but also create community, generate reflection, and emotionally mobilize both participants and spectators. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Impact on students: more than a subject, a life experience<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The testimonies collected speak for themselves: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 100% of students consider this training essential for their professional future. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 More than 90% understand design as a tool for social justice after the project. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Almost half became involved in equality projects outside the classroom after these experiences. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 For many, the performance meant empowerment, awareness, and action: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are not alone; we have an army of sisters,\u201d declared one student. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This shows that these projects not only teach but also transform. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conclusion: to educate is also to mobilize<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The work of Martorell and S\u00e1ez-Salvador brings a fundamental idea to the table: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

when education incorporates the body, art, and collective action, learning becomes an experience that transcends the classroom and projects itself into society. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Performance, in this context, is not just an artistic practice: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

it is a pedagogical, political, and emotional tool for: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 questioning hegemonic discourses, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 denouncing sexist violence, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 strengthening empathy and cooperation, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 and training young people to imagine and build more just worlds. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because educating with art is a powerful way to transform reality. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
