{"id":25843,"date":"2025-11-26T10:14:26","date_gmt":"2025-11-26T09:14:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/?p=25843"},"modified":"2025-11-26T10:15:11","modified_gmt":"2025-11-26T09:15:11","slug":"snapshot-of-spanish-video-podcasting-on-youtube-and-spotify","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/en\/2025\/11\/snapshot-of-spanish-video-podcasting-on-youtube-and-spotify\/","title":{"rendered":"Snapshot of Spanish video podcasting on YouTube and Spotify\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In recent years, the podcast has become a regular format for keeping ourselves informed, entertained,&nbsp;and learning while we&nbsp;engage in&nbsp;other activities.&nbsp;However, a recent study by researchers at the&nbsp;Universitat&nbsp;Polit\u00e8cnica&nbsp;de Val\u00e8ncia and the&nbsp;Universitat&nbsp;de Val\u00e8ncia,&nbsp;published in&nbsp;a&nbsp;journal&nbsp;<em>index,comunicaci\u00f3n,<\/em>&nbsp;shows&nbsp;that&nbsp;this soundscape is undergoing a key transformation: the rise of the video podcast.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In essence, we&nbsp;are&nbsp;referring to&nbsp;shows that combine traditional&nbsp;podcast audio&nbsp;with video recordings,&nbsp;which are primarily&nbsp;available on YouTube and Spotify.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A study of more than 100 video podcasts&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The research team \u2014 Nadia Alonso-L\u00f3pez (UPV), Carlos L\u00f3pez-Olano (UV),&nbsp;and Jos\u00e9 Gamir-R\u00edos (UV) \u2014 analysed 112 video podcasts published on YouTube and Spotify between September and October 2023. To do so, they examined their technical features, content,&nbsp;presenters,&nbsp;and the production models behind them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1135\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Autores-1-1135x500.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25838\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Autores-1-1135x500.webp 1135w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Autores-1-567x250.webp 567w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Autores-1-768x338.webp 768w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Autores-1-1536x677.webp 1536w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Autores-1-2048x902.webp 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1135px) 100vw, 1135px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The results paint a clear picture: video podcasting in Spain is growing&nbsp;rapidly, and it is doing so&nbsp;in a&nbsp;very defined pattern.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Independent productions and digital natives&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most&nbsp;significant findings is that more than 80% of video podcasts are&nbsp;explicitly created for distribution on online platforms;&nbsp;in other words,&nbsp;they are digital natives.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of them are independent projects, not tied to traditional media, although some production companies and brands are beginning to experiment with the format.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Radio has also moved into this space: shows such as&nbsp;<em>Nadie sabe nada<\/em>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<em>El&nbsp;b\u00fanquer<\/em>&nbsp;broaden their audience by offering video versions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Conversation, humour,&nbsp;and entertainment<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another&nbsp;evident&nbsp;trend is the type of content.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The conversational genre is dominant, with&nbsp;almost eight out of ten shows consisting&nbsp;of chats between hosts and guests, often in a humorous or informal tone.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most popular topics are:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>General interest&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Emotional wellbeing&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Economics and business&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sport and politics, to a lesser extent&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The main intention is entertainment. However, there is also growth in outreach and educational content.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Who presents video podcasts?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The study highlights several key points:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Shows presented by a single person are the majority.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There is a greater male presence among hosts.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>More than half of the presenters have no&nbsp;previous&nbsp;experience in the media.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This reflects how the format has become a gateway into the audiovisual world for digital content creators.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Professional sets and multi-camera production&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although many video podcasts&nbsp;initially started&nbsp;in indoor spaces at home, professionalization is advancing quickly.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The analysis shows that:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Most are recorded on professional sets.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>More than 65% use multi-camera production, which allows for alternate shots, reactions,&nbsp;and visual dynamism.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Graphics, on-screen titles,&nbsp;and a carefully designed visual style are used.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>All this brings video podcasting ever closer to a television-style format\u2026 but with the creative freedom of the Internet.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Long episodes and a presence on TikTok<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Episodes&nbsp;typically last between one and two hours, which is significantly longer than&nbsp;the traditional audio-only podcast. According to the study, this length strengthens the sense of community with the audience.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, more than 60% of shows utilize TikTok to share short clips that&nbsp;serve&nbsp;as a hook to attract new viewers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why is video podcasting&nbsp;experiencing such rapid growth?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The study points to several key factors:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Younger generations prefer to consume content with images.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Video&nbsp;enables the observation of&nbsp;gestures, reactions,&nbsp;and rapport between participants.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Platforms such as Spotify have introduced video functions to compete with YouTube.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mobile consumption makes it easy to watch or simply listen to the&nbsp;duplicate content.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>All this has led to the rapid expansion of a hybrid format that combines the best of audio and video.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A new stage in digital communication&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The research concludes that video podcasting is not just an extension of podcasting,&nbsp;but a natural evolution of today\u2019s media ecosystem: more visual, more conversational, more interactive,&nbsp;and with a strong multi-platform presence.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These and other issues related to podcasting and video podcasting will be addressed at the Congreso&nbsp;Innocast&nbsp;2025, co-directed by&nbsp;Nadia Alonso-L\u00f3pez, lecturer at the&nbsp;campus de Gandia UPV,&nbsp;and Carlos L\u00f3pez-Olano, lecturer at the&nbsp;Universitat&nbsp;de Val\u00e8ncia.
