This achievement is the result of the international scientific collaboration KM3NeT, which includes the IGIC Research Institute at Campus Gandia of the Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Val\u00e8ncia, along with the Joint Unit with the Spanish Institute of Oceanography.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Two years ago, the ARCA detector of the KM3NeT underwater neutrino telescope recorded an extraordinary deep-sea event linked to a neutrino with an estimated energy of approximately 220 PeV (220 \u00d7 10\u00b9\u2075 electron volts or 220,000 trillion electron volts).<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 1200px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-20640-1\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/02_Deployment_DetectionUnit_\u00a9KM3NeT.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/02_Deployment_DetectionUnit_\u00a9KM3NeT.mp4\">https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/02_Deployment_DetectionUnit_\u00a9KM3NeT.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<p>This event, named KM3-230213A, is the most energetic neutrino ever detected and offers the first evidence that neutrinos of such extreme energies are generated in the Universe. After years of meticulous analysis and interpretation of experimental data, on February 12, 2025, the international KM3NeT scientific collaboration\u2014including researchers from the IGIC Institute at Campus Gandia of the Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Val\u00e8ncia and the IEO-UPV Joint Unit of the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (CSIC-UPV)\u2014published the details of this groundbreaking discovery in Nature.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2jgyZlBpkl8?si=jJCqrZRHQQXPEDai\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The Campus Gandia team, led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upv.es\/pls\/oalu\/sic_person.Info?p_alias=miarra1&amp;P_IDIOMA=i\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>Miguel Ardid<\/u><\/a>, has been involved in KM3NeT<a href=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/en\/2015\/12\/campus-gandia-to-take-part-in-the-construction-of-the-worlds-largest-neutrino-telescope\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>\u00a0<\/u><u>since its inception in 2006<\/u><\/a>, when the design of the infrastructure began. The team conducts R&amp;D in both the technological aspects, focusing primarily on the <strong>acoustic and positioning <\/strong><strong>s<\/strong><strong>ystems of the underwater detector, and in astroparticle physics analysis.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe anticipated that KM3NeT would make groundbreaking discoveries, but we didn\u2019t expect them to come so early with a partial detector configuration.\u00a0 Moreover, it was a stroke of luck\u2014double luck for UPV\u2014since the <strong>ultra-energetic neutrino was detected precisely during the operation of the detector built by UPV,<\/strong>\u201d explains Ardid.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-20623 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Foto-Miquel-Ardid_KM3Net-scaled.webp\" alt=\"Miquel Ardid\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1440\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Foto-Miquel-Ardid_KM3Net-scaled.webp 2560w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Foto-Miquel-Ardid_KM3Net-444x250.webp 444w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Foto-Miquel-Ardid_KM3Net-889x500.webp 889w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Foto-Miquel-Ardid_KM3Net-768x432.webp 768w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Foto-Miquel-Ardid_KM3Net-1536x864.webp 1536w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Foto-Miquel-Ardid_KM3Net-2048x1152.webp 2048w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Foto-Miquel-Ardid_KM3Net-150x84.webp 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Paschal Coyle, KM3NeT spokesperson at the time of the detection and researcher at the IN2P3\/CNRS Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique \u2013 Centre de Physique des Particules de Marseille (France), emphasizes that KM3NeT has begun exploring a range of energy and sensitivity where the detected neutrinos are likely produced by extreme astrophysical phenomena. \u201cThis first detection of a neutrino with hundreds of PeV <strong>opens a new chapter in neutrino astronomy and provides a new window for observing the Universe,<\/strong>\u201d he emphasized.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Black Holes, Supernovae, and Gamma-Ray Bursts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The high-energy Universe is home to colossal phenomena, including supermassive black holes at the centers of certain galaxies, supernova explosions, and gamma-ray bursts\u2014extraordinary events that remain only partially understood. These powerful cosmic accelerators produce streams of particles known as cosmic rays. Some cosmic rays can interact with surrounding matter or photons, producing neutrinos and photons. In Spain, in addition to the IGIC at the Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Val\u00e8ncia, the following institutions are also involved: IFIC (Institute of Corpuscular Physics, a joint center of the Universitat de Val\u00e8ncia and CSIC), the University of Granada, the IEO-UPV Joint Unit of the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (CSIC-UPV), and the LAB at the Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Catalunya.
