Unfortunately, <strong>the majority of these mattresses end up in landfills<\/strong>, creating a series of problems: they take up large volumes of space, they cause instability in the landfill and increase the risk of fires due to overheating of the iron material they contain or to spontaneous combustion of certain materials.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis represents a real <strong>environmental problem<\/strong> and finding a solution for recycling these mattresses is key to achieving the recycling objectives for 2030,\u201d indicated the professor at Campus Gandia of the Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Val\u00e8ncia (UPV) and Principal Investigator of the <a href=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/en\/2021\/10\/recycling-mattresses-for-sustainable-construction\/\">ORACLE project<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upv.es\/pls\/oalu\/sic_person.Info?p_alias=roderey&amp;P_IDIOMA=i\">Romina del Rey<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: 1px solid #CCC; border-width: 1px; margin-bottom: 5px; max-width: 100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/slideshow\/embed_code\/key\/E2dqEEvpUiTRQq?startSlide=1\" width=\"597\" height=\"486\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mattress Recycling<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nearly 30 million mattresses reach the end of their life each year in the European Union. In the Valencian Community, around 300,000. Although recycling presents some challenges, end-of-life mattresses can be treated and their components given a new life through the development of new technologies and <strong>advances made in the circular econom<\/strong>y.<\/p>\n<p>For example: the metals in mattress can be melted down to create new metals, new textile products can be obtained from old fabric, and reused polyurethane &#8220;represents a great opportunity for promoting <strong>sustainable construction<\/strong>, since important aspect such as insulation and acoustic comfort can be improved with the raw materials found in landfills.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-18188\" src=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Corte-Muestras-Oracle-667x500.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"667\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Corte-Muestras-Oracle-667x500.jpeg 667w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Corte-Muestras-Oracle-333x250.jpeg 333w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Corte-Muestras-Oracle-768x576.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Corte-Muestras-Oracle-1536x1152.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Corte-Muestras-Oracle-150x113.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Corte-Muestras-Oracle.jpeg 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 667px) 100vw, 667px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As a result of the ORACLE project, <strong>recycled mattress material<\/strong> has been reintroduced into the bedding industry, as well as in solutions to noise problems in buildings. With this, \u201cthe waste produced in cities becomes raw material in the construction of those same cities, creating synergies between the bedding and construction industries, and promoting the circular economy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The project \u201cDevelopment of recycled polyurethane (PU) cores from used mattresses for sustainable construction with high added value (ORACLE)\u201d, started in 2021 with the UPV as one of the development partners, has once again &#8220;showcased the knowledge, innovation and technology of the UPV at the service of society, responding to new needs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-18192\" src=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Foto-equipo-375x500.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Foto-equipo-375x500.jpg 375w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Foto-equipo-188x250.jpg 188w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Foto-equipo-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Foto-equipo-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Foto-equipo-113x150.jpg 113w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Foto-equipo.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 375px) 100vw, 375px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>CV+i Circular Day<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The work developed in the ORACLE project was presented at <a href=\"https:\/\/cvi-comunitatvalenciana.com\/circular-day\/\">CV+i Circular Day<\/a>.
