This agriculture requires <strong>advanced technologies to monitor crops<\/strong> and optimize the use of resources to achieve more efficient irrigation and, ultimately, better crop performance, among other aims.<\/p>\n<p>Of the technology required by precision agriculture, the Internet of Things (IoT) systems offer tremendous potential. Although in certain settings such as rural areas, implementation can prove more complicated due to vegetation, among other factors. Specifically, soil monitoring applications can be subject to interference caused by foliage density or plant height and\/or width.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-18031\" src=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/imagen-sensores-1-206x250.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"206\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/imagen-sensores-1-206x250.jpg 206w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/imagen-sensores-1-412x500.jpg 412w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/imagen-sensores-1-124x150.jpg 124w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/imagen-sensores-1.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 206px) 100vw, 206px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To address this, a team from Campus Gandia of the Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Val\u00e8ncia has proposed a <strong>new distribution strategy for soil monitoring networks<\/strong> that enable more efficient irrigation scheduling in these areas as well. Their study proposes a <strong>monitoring system<\/strong> that includes the architecture, the design of the nodes and an algorithm to determine irrigation needs based on FAO recommendations and sensor data.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-18034\" src=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/investigadores-557x250.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"557\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/investigadores-557x250.jpg 557w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/investigadores-1113x500.jpg 1113w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/investigadores-768x345.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/investigadores-1536x690.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/investigadores-150x67.jpg 150w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/investigadores.jpg 1955w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 557px) 100vw, 557px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To arrive at this system, they evaluated different wireless sensor network (WSN) deployment configurations, identifying the effects of the rural environment on the signal and the fundamental requirements for the design of these networks. They analyzed their performance with different types of vegetation (orange orchards, bushes and grasslands) and in different locations of the Wi-Fi nodes (on the ground, near the ground and above the ground).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the study we saw that vegetation creates high variability in areas with high foliage density. Sensors installed on the ground had more signal problems, even with vegetation where most of the foliage is found at higher altitudes.
