The acoustic field is so intense that it creates shockwaves in the rocket that can damage both the cargo being transported (usually satellites) and the rocket&#8217;s instruments. This is the reason behind the study of <strong>a metamaterial designed to absorb nearly 100% of the incident sound energy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.upv.es\/en\">Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Val\u00e8ncia (UPV)<\/a>, belonging to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.upv.es\/contenidos\/CGANDIA\/index-en.html\">Campus Gandia<\/a>, the Institute of Instrumentation for Molecular Imaging (i3M), the University Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics and the Department of Continuous Media and Theory of Structures, have been working since 2019 on the <strong>Launch Sound Level Reduction project<\/strong>, funded by the <strong>European Space Agency (ESA)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The Campus Gandia researcher, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.upv.es\/pls\/oalu\/sic_person.Info?p_alias=victorsm&amp;P_IDIOMA=i\">V\u00edctor S\u00e1nchez<\/a>, an expert in Acoustics, is heading this project on behalf of the UPV, in participation with the Polytechnic University of Madrid, Le Mans University and the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC), as well as the Valencian company COMET Engineering S.L., who is the project&#8217;s main contractor for ESA.<\/p>\n<p>The principal aim of the project is &#8220;the design, manufacture and characterization of an acoustic <strong>metamaterial prototype capable of absorbing a large part of the acoustic energy at the rocket launch pad<\/strong>,&#8221; indicated <a href=\"http:\/\/www.upv.es\/pls\/oalu\/sic_person.info?PE=K5MRNhA8C7jb1JImvB6sNQD7uenbgeZYPoL0UxUllqxF5qfM5p60C3aFOtRc0p0ztuOg783uRXRW%2FP0lsgPW4cS0hOmumr88E84Io8VCuYlWjGPvbiFh2A%3D%3D&amp;P_IDIOMA=i&amp;P_VISTA=normal\">Rub\u00e9n Pic\u00f3<\/a>, a researcher from Campus Gandia.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.upv.es\/ficha-personal\/joreple\">Jos\u00e9 Manuel Requena<\/a>, a project researcher, has taken part in the development of the metamaterial prototype. \u201cNumerical simulation tools have been used to design it. En este \u00faltimo, Iv\u00e1n Herrero <a href=\"http:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/2020\/06\/ivan-herrero-defiende-su-tesis-doctoral-online-durante-el-periodo-de-confinamiento\/\">desarroll\u00f3 su tesis doctoral \u201cM\u00e9todos de reducci\u00f3n de ruido ac\u00fastico para la plataforma de lanzamiento\u201d, defendida en 2020<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to the project, Campus Gandia research staff\u00a0 have participated in two other projects also financed by the ESA: the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/en\/2014\/10\/noise-reduction-during-space-launches\/\">Sonic Crystals for Noise Reduction at the Launchpad<\/a><\/strong> project and the <strong>Acoustic Noise Reduction Methods for the Launch Pad<\/strong> project. The latter was the basis for Iv\u00e1n Herrero&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/en\/2020\/06\/ivan-herrero-defends-his-doctoral-dissertation-online-during-the-confinement-period\/\">doctoral dissertation titled &#8220;Acoustic noise
