However, having access to a lot more information does not necessarily mean that we are better informed.<\/p>\n<p>The terms f<em>ake news, clickbait<\/em> or <em>fact-checking<\/em> have been thrust upon our collective reality, making it difficult to discern the degree of truth of the information being published in the media; <strong>the Post-Truth Era<\/strong>. <a href=\"https:\/\/intranet.upv.es\/pls\/soalu\/sic_per.info_persona?PE=K5MRNhA8C7jD9%2BMCglpUDAkqDmRTZVgVMHNGFf9W2JH0i7lVQyCjFXaFOtRc0p0z8dhJCb3RQ9RW%2FP0lsgPW4d6q53q5drb1JQy10X5Ak3Xc%2BVQxZNOolw%3D%3D&amp;P_TIPOBUS=0&amp;P_VISTA=normal&amp;P_IDIOMA=i\">Nadia Alonso<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/intranet.upv.es\/pls\/soalu\/sic_per.info_persona?PE=K5MRNhA8C7jD9%2BMCglpUDGiIZx7C6kZIZuNDVuWtvZD0i7lVQyCjFXaFOtRc0p0zysSLAEJ%2BBA1W%2FP0lsgPW4d6q53q5drb17PBYi2tHDVp9a0584axEXA%3D%3D&amp;P_IDIOMA=i&amp;P_TIPOBUS=0&amp;P_VISTA=normal\">Ra\u00fal Terol<\/a>, esperts in Communication from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.upv.es\/contenidos\/CGANDIA\/index-en.html\">Campus Gandia of the Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Val\u00e8ncia<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.upv.es\/contenidos\/CGANDIA\/index-en.html\">UPV<\/a>), are studying this phenomenon and analyzing fact-checking systems and their role in restoring society &#8216;s trust in the in the news media.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/woman-reading-newspaper.jpg\" alt=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/woman-reading-newspaper.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>FACT-CHECKING TOOL<\/p>\n<p>The researchers argue that, although \u201cthe deliberate use of disinformation is nothing new,\u201d the changes in the ways that we consume information have promoted the proliferation of fake news, even in conventional media, discrediting the image of the media as the channels for truthful information. This climate of mistrust, &#8220;has led the conventional media to show the the fact-checking process for the news that they publish, as well as promote the creation of fact-checking agencies for the sake of greater transparency and credibility,&#8221; Nadia Alonso explains.<\/p>\n<p>For their research, Alonso and Terol analyzed <strong>38 Spanish digital newspapers<\/strong> in order to check whether they implement any fact-checking tool on the facts they provided in their news and, if so, to determine their characteristics and effectiveness. The result &#8211; in the moment they conducted their research &#8211; was that o<strong>nly four some kind of fact-checking mechanism<\/strong>: the newspapers El Mundo, El Pa\u00eds and Cambio 16 are members of the <strong>The Trust Project<\/strong> platform (now there are some more), and the newspaper Public implements the <strong>Tj Tool<\/strong> software.<\/p>\n<p>FAKE NEWS DURING THE PANDEMIC<\/p>\n<p>With the onset of the COVID-19 public health emergency, the spread of fake news on social media and messaging apps <strong>has increased exponentially<\/strong>. &#8220;This has generated tremendous uncertainty and misinformation among the public in a context in which access to truthful information is of vital importance,&#8221; says Ra\u00fal Terol.<\/p>\n<p>Alonso and Terol have centered their research on this period by <strong>analyzing the Transparency Index of the news related to COVID-19<\/strong> that were published by Diario P\u00fablico in the first 14 days of the state of alarm, since it is the only mainstream newspaper that implements a tool that shows the <strong>traceability of the news production process<\/strong>.
