This challenge is the subject of the study entitled <strong>&#8220;Sustainability of the Fisheries Sector in the Valencian Community: the Challenge of Generational Renewal&#8221;<\/strong>, by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/andrea-m%C3%A1rquez\/?miniProfileUrn=urn%3Ali%3Afs_miniProfile%3AACoAAB2DqKIBpJPBWQXalad25Hnq7SGzG2Uy-EY\"><strong>Andrea M\u00e1rquez<\/strong><\/a>, a graduate in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.upv.es\/titulaciones\/MUESAEMC\/indexc.html\">University Master&#8217;s Degree in Environmental Assessment and Monitoring of Marine and Coastal Ecosystems<\/a> at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.upv.es\/contenidos\/CGANDIA\/index-en.html\">Campus Gandia of the Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Val\u00e8ncia (UPV)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-14835\" src=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/1-andrea_ma\u0301rquez_premio-tfm-copia-375x500.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/1-andrea_ma\u0301rquez_premio-tfm-copia-375x500.jpg 375w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/1-andrea_ma\u0301rquez_premio-tfm-copia-188x250.jpg 188w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/1-andrea_ma\u0301rquez_premio-tfm-copia-113x150.jpg 113w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/1-andrea_ma\u0301rquez_premio-tfm-copia.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 375px) 100vw, 375px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The study, supervised by <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.upv.es\/pls\/oalu\/sic_person.Info?p_alias=paherra&amp;P_IDIOMA=i\">Paloma Herrera<\/a><\/strong>, an expert in fishing and the environment at the campus, <strong>won an award in the category of Best Final Master&#8217;s Project<\/strong> in the 4th edition of the Awards granted by the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coambcv.com\/coambcv3x\/\">Professional College of Environmental Sciences of the Valencian Community (CoAmbCV<\/a><\/strong>, for its Spanish initials). \u201cReceiving this award is a recognition of the research behind the numerical results and the interviews, in which many people participate. It is also a recognition of the problems that we try to make visible and explain here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe id=\"audio_76182851\" style=\"border: 1px solid #EEE; box-sizing: border-box; width: 100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ivoox.com\/player_ej_76182851_4_1.html?c1=ff6600\" height=\"200\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cEl problema no es exclusivo de la pesca\u201d, como ha asegurado M\u00e1rquez, \u201csino que viene produci\u00e9ndose desde hace d\u00e9cadas en todas las actividades del sector primario\u201d. &#8220;Las pol\u00edticas pesqueras han centrado su atenci\u00f3n en problemas ambientales y econ\u00f3micos\u201d, lo que \u201cha contribuido a la falta de conocimientos y estudios sobre el relevo generacional y a la ausencia de mecanismos de inserci\u00f3n laboral para afrontar este reto\u201d. Definida la problem\u00e1tica y analizados los datos num\u00e9ricos recogidos, se desprende que \u201c<strong>para el a\u00f1o 2025 habr\u00e1 un descenso del 35% en el n\u00famero de tripulantes y del 31% en el n\u00famero de embarcaciones respecto al a\u00f1o 2019<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The problem is not exclusive to fishing,&#8221; according to M\u00e1rquez, &#8220;but it has been occurring for decades in all activities of the primary sector.&#8221; &#8220;Fishing policies have focused their attention on environmental and economic problems&#8221;, which &#8220;has contributed to the lack of knowledge and studies on generational renewal and the absence of labor insertion mechanisms to face this challenge.&#8221; Once the problem has been defined and the numerical data collected has been analyzed, it reveals that, &#8220;<strong>by the year 2025 there will be a 35% decrease in the number of crew members and a 31% decrease in the number of boats compared to 2019<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-14838 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/dsc_0188-recorte-500x500.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/dsc_0188-recorte-500x500.jpg 500w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/dsc_0188-recorte-250x250.jpg 250w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/dsc_0188-recorte-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/dsc_0188-recorte-1536x1536.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/dsc_0188-recorte-2048x2048.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/dsc_0188-recorte-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Source: EUCRANTE<\/p>\n<p>SOCIO-ENVIRONMENTAL REALITY OF THE FISHING INDUSTRY<\/p>\n<p>The research project received <strong>inputs from the fishing associations of the ports of Benicarl\u00f3, Cullera, D\u00e9nia, Gandia, Sagunto and X\u00e0bia<\/strong> who argue that, in addition to the structural problems that increase economic instability, &#8220;the increasing presence of tourists in the coastal towns, the uncontrolled presence of recreational boats and recreational fishing in coastal waters interfere with the commercial fishing activities that take place closes to shore.&#8221; Faced with this situation, &#8220;fishermen feel abandoned and undervalued by the Administration,&#8221; and, consequently, &#8220;fishing has become a rather unappealing job for young people.&#8221; Other obstacles identified include &#8220;the mandatory establishment of training courses prior to going on board, the paternal-familial nature of the activity, the masculinization of the sector or the preferences for other trades shown by new generations.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 960px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-14825-1\" width=\"960\" height=\"720\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/entrevista-andrea-marquez.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/entrevista-andrea-marquez.mp4\">https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/entrevista-andrea-marquez.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<p>Interview with Andrea M\u00e1rquez, Campus Gandia UPV student awarded by the Col\u00b7legi Professional Ci\u00e8ncies Ambientals Comunitat Valenciana.<\/p>\n<p>ALTERNATIVES FOR SUSTAINABILITY OF THE FISHING INDUSTRY<\/p>\n<p>M\u00e1rquez&#8217; study has also proposed a series of <strong>strategies<\/strong> that would make it possible to regain <strong>structural balance and achieve sustainability in the sector<\/strong>. &#8220;There are many measures that have been adopted by the European Union,&#8221; however, they have not helped to increase the appeal of the activity to attract the younger generations. For this reason, the study proposes the creation of an appropriate form of cooperativism, establish wages, carry out campaigns aimed at the public and specific campaigns to promote the consumption of fresh fish and seafood, as well as campaigns to make women&#8217;s work visible or incorporate the fishing trade in Vocational Training.<\/p>\n<p>Given the lack of specific studies on generational renewal in fishing, M\u00e1rquez and Herrera continue with their research, extending the scope of study to the entire Spanish Mediterranean, where the possible lack of younger generations could endanger the sustainability of the sector.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>More information<\/p>\n<p>M\u00e1rquez Escamilla, A.
