For this reason, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.upv.es\/contenidos\/CGANDIA\/index-en.html\">Campus de Gandia<\/a> researchers from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.upv.es\/index-en.html\">Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Val\u00e8ncia (UPV)<\/a> have carried out a study that proposes the <strong>use of high resolution images and machine learning techniques for remote sensing of abandoned citrus plots<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>Remote sensing can provide very valuable information for the control, monitoring and management of agricultural plots,&#8221;<\/strong> said <a href=\"http:\/\/www.upv.es\/pls\/oalu\/sic_person.info?PE=K5MRNhA8C7iTib%2FgTfPnDH9jEHmW6bB9FPK58HEwfG70i7lVQyCjFXaFOtRc0p0z8HfoIu2wU%2FJW%2FP0lsgPW4ffbJBlxYkXaaZ%2BUtOuOECni46ey%2FlZXzA%3D%3D&amp;P_IDIOMA=i&amp;P_VISTA=\"><strong>Sergio Morell<\/strong><\/a>, Campus researcher. \u201cTraditionally, agricultural maps have been generated through photo-interpretation of orthophotos or through field campaigns. But today, remote sensing has become a powerful tool for obtaining land use maps that can replace the creation of manual maps with a more efficient use of personal resources and greater immediacy \u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13992\" src=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/1-imagen_parcelas-abandonadas.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"370\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/1-imagen_parcelas-abandonadas.jpg 640w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/1-imagen_parcelas-abandonadas-432x250.jpg 432w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/1-imagen_parcelas-abandonadas-150x87.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The study, carried out by Morell alongside fellow experts in remote sensing, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.upv.es\/pls\/oalu\/sic_person.info?PE=K5MRNhA8C7iTib%2FgTfPnDGNJh%2FCt%2BmPRpCLH13n99r70i7lVQyCjFXaFOtRc0p0zq8JqPuXsfIFW%2FP0lsgPW4ffbJBlxYkXa0OOgpU%2BpdEZKSj4YWEA1%2BQ%3D%3D&amp;P_IDIOMA=i&amp;P_VISTA=normal\">Mar\u00eda Teresa Sebasti\u00e1<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.upv.es\/pls\/oalu\/sic_person.info?PE=K5MRNhA8C7iTib%2FgTfPnDMBhyMtxWZ2PowD73IGDVoD0i7lVQyCjFXaFOtRc0p0zNXHf%2F0IvKfcNw2s9GHQjy84bM%2FW%2F4HfcRzmKYuR2TWeCzOLecQHkbg%3D%3D&amp;P_IDIOMA=i&amp;P_VISTA=normal\">Javier Estornell<\/a><\/strong>, from Campus Gandia, demonstrates the difficulty in detecting abandoned citrus plots through the images from the Sentinel-2 satellite of the Copernicus program of the European Commission, and proposes the use of high resolution images. The difficulty in our area \u201cis due to the small size of the agricultural holdings, the considerable spatial fragmentation and the minimal spectral differences between abandoned plots and producing plots.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-13998\" src=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/2-foto_investigadores1-759x500.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"669\" height=\"441\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/2-foto_investigadores1-759x500.jpg 759w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/2-foto_investigadores1-380x250.jpg 380w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/2-foto_investigadores1-150x99.jpg 150w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/2-foto_investigadores1.jpg 764w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 669px) 100vw, 669px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the study, published in the journal Remote Sensing and which is also the result of <strong>Sergio Morell<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>doctoral thesis<\/strong>, a <strong>methodology was developed for the detection of abandoned plots<\/strong> and showing that high-resolution aerial images with four spectral bands generate more accurate results than the Sentinel-2 images for identifying small-sized abandoned citrus plots.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NEW APPROACH<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Land abandonment has been studied in the remote sensing field. However, until now there had been little study and <strong>abandoned citrus-growing lands had not been geolocated with this level of detail<\/strong>. As Morell details, \u201cthe proposed methodology <strong>combines remote sensing and machine learning techniques that permit agricultural plots to be classified into three categories<\/strong> (abandoned, productive and non-productive) based on spectral and textural information derived from a high-resolution image. The town covers an area of 59,600 hectares, 50% of which is available for agriculture (95% citrus). However, the unfavorable results of the Valencian citrus campaign in the European market, the weaknesses of the sector itself together with urban expansion and tourism compete with agricultural land uses and are promoting the land abandonment in this municipality. According to the initial results, \u201capproximately <strong>30% of the agricultural plots in Oliva are abandoned<\/strong>.
