The low rainfall that characterize this climate is compounded by the effect of climate change, making this trend more pronounced, according to forecasts by experts, and reducing the availability of water for irrigation in the future.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13710\" src=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/capturas-goinnowater-2b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"287\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/capturas-goinnowater-2b.jpg 640w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/capturas-goinnowater-2b-557x250.jpg 557w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/capturas-goinnowater-2b-150x67.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This forecast highlights the need for <strong>means of monitoring and evaluating irrigation management and performance<\/strong> to address water shortage issues and, in turn, increase productivity efficiently and sustainably. To this end, research staff from<a href=\"http:\/\/www.upv.es\/contenidos\/CGANDIA\/index-en.html\"> Campus Gandia of the Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Val\u00e8ncia<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.upv.es\/contenidos\/CGANDIA\/index-en.html\">UPV<\/a>), in collaboration with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.umh.es\/?lang=EN\">Universitas Miguel Hern\u00e1ndez de Elche (UMH)<\/a>, have carried out a study that uses <strong>performance indicators to evaluate the efficiency of irrigation systems in citrus groves<\/strong> in eastern Spain.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_D80bgDNROk\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In the study, 5 indicators have been selected to evaluate the performance in the water input, relating irrigation and effective precipitation to the needs of the crop; productive efficiency, relating the overall harvest and the highest quality fruit to the volume of irrigation water; and economic efficiency, relating to the income from the crop to the cost of irrigation water.<\/p>\n<p>These indicators are then applied to a database. &#8220;Given the particular characteristics of the area and the citrus growing system in eastern Spain, we include two key variables in our analysis to help understand the changes in the indicators: the quality obtained and the income based on the irrigation applied,&#8221; indicates <a href=\"http:\/\/www.upv.es\/pls\/oalu\/sic_person.info?PE=78mSD%2FYIsTjPPD2n%2Fg%2BHmm52gAzLbNABzknB0EFGHoP0i7lVQyCjFXaFOtRc0p0z1%2F6TUY5G68n4dItgBOvd8tsmmi5AnfFnYUtT7EK2KZXWDmvlvNHFPg%3D%3D&amp;P_IDIOMA=i&amp;P_VISTA=normal\"><strong>Bernat Roig-Merino<\/strong><\/a>, a campus researcher. This data has been compiled by an irrigation community and a cooperative of citrus farmers in the area that has been studied for five years.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13698\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13698\" style=\"width: 475px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13698 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/goinnowater-cr-de-la-foia-del-pou.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"485\" height=\"286\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/goinnowater-cr-de-la-foia-del-pou.png 485w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/goinnowater-cr-de-la-foia-del-pou-424x250.png 424w, https:\/\/cienciagandia.webs.upv.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/goinnowater-cr-de-la-foia-del-pou-150x88.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 485px) 100vw, 485px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13698\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">AIS implemented by the GOINNOWATER project in the CR de la Foia del Pou (Vall d&#8217;Albaida)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>INNOVATIVE APPROACH<\/p>\n<p>The study implements an <strong>artificial intelligence system<\/strong> to predict the productive efficiency of a citrus groves based on size and water supply. &#8220;The use of artificial intelligence is combined with one of the indicators to establish recommendations on irrigation management for farmers,&#8221; says <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.upv.es\/pls\/oalu\/sic_person.info?PE=78mSD%2FYIsTjPPD2n%2Fg%2BHmnrqxEfX3SVQAHJy7QALp0b0i7lVQyCjFXaFOtRc0p0zGhWGl%2FSmfmloD0wvUzsh3yA5OlYBu1NCmoyWsHxSDJDVtSrq0BoLsw%3D%3D&amp;P_IDIOMA=i&amp;P_VISTA=normal\">Jaime Lloret<\/a><\/strong>, an expert in Artificial Intelligence at the campus.
