Campus Gandia, National Epicenter of Oceanographic Research

Environmental Science

The Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO), belonging to the Higher Center for Scientific Research (CSIC), will build a new research center in Gandia that will take advantage of the successful 13-year long track record of the Joint Unit in Technology for Marine Studies (UTEM), made up of the IEO and Campus Gandia of the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV). This announcement was made by the acting Minister of Science and Innovation of the Government of Spain, Diana Morant, who detailed that construction is expected to start in 2024, in the hopes that it will be operational in 2025. She further...

The ThinkInAzul Comunitat Valenciana Programme Comes to an End

R&D&I

The ThinkInAzul Comunitat Valenciana programme concluded on 31 December, marking the end of three years of coordinated work in the field of marine sciences. This programme forms part of the Complementary R&D&I Plan in Marine Sciences ThinkInAzul, a joint initiative involving seven autonomous communities —Andalusia, Cantabria, Comunitat Valenciana, Galicia, Region of Murcia, Canary Islands and Balearic Islands— aimed at integrating, strengthening and highlighting marine research carried out across these territories. Over the past three years, ThinkInAzul has promoted the creation of a network of centres of excellence, fostering scientific cooperation to address key challenges such as sustainable aquaculture, new marine...

Exploring the Presence of Fin Whales Off the Coast of Dénia

Environmental Science

A research team from Campus Gandia of the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) has successfully tagged three fin whales with satellite devices to study their migratory routes, and has photo-identified 21 migrating individuals using drones this season. As part of this year’s research campaign led by the Universitat Politècnica de València, nearly 120 fin whales—the second-largest animals on the planet—have been recorded off the coast of Dénia. In addition, the UPV team successfully tagged three fin whales with satellite devices to track their migratory routes and collected two genetic samples using non-invasive techniques, capturing the animals’ ‘breath’ with a drone....

Study to Mitigate Risks to Marine Megafauna

Environmental Science

A team from Campus Gandia of the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) has contributed to an international study tracking the movements of over 100 large marine species, helping identify the world’s most critical ocean areas for their conservation. Coordinated by the Australian National University and endorsed by the UN, the MegaMove project brings together nearly 400 scientists from over 50 countries to identify the most effective locations for protective measures to conserve marine megafauna—such as sharks, whales, turtles, and seals. The findings have been published in the journal Science. At present, marine protected areas encompass just 8% of the world’s...

New Podcast Launch: Más Claro Agua (Crystal Clear)

Environmental Science

Despite their crucial role on Earth, we still know more about distant planets than we do about our own oceans. “Más Claro Agua” (Crystal Clear) is a podcast that dives deep beneath the surface to explore the ocean’s astonishing biodiversity and pressing environmental challenges—uncovering the secrets our seas still hold.  The podcast was launched by the Eucrante Association in collaboration with the Campus Gandia of the Universitat Politècnica de València. Its goal is to explore and answer questions about the marine ecosystem, from fishing methods and cephalopods to marine reptiles, oceanic Posidonia, and even the mysterious phenomenon of marine snow—among...

UPV Takes Part in Detecting the Highest- Energy Neutrino Ever Recorded

Technology

This discovery, published in the scientific journal Nature, unveils a new way to observe the Universe. This achievement is the result of the international scientific collaboration KM3NeT, which includes the IGIC Research Institute at Campus Gandia of the Universitat Politècnica de València, along with the Joint Unit with the Spanish Institute of Oceanography. Two years ago, the ARCA detector of the KM3NeT underwater neutrino telescope recorded an extraordinary deep-sea event linked to a neutrino with an estimated energy of approximately 220 PeV (220 × 10¹⁵ electron volts or 220,000 trillion electron volts). This event, named KM3-230213A, is the most energetic...

Sensors to Track Climate Change Effects on the Valencian Coast

Environmental Science

Supported by a grant from the Climate Change Chair at the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV), Miguel Zaragoza has undertaken a research project titled: “Developing a Sensor System to Monitor the Effects of Climate Change on Valencian Coastal Waters”. This project was supervised by Jaime Lloret, a research professor at Campus Gandia (UPV). What were the primary objectives of your research? The primary objectives were to design and implement a multiparameter node capable of conducting comprehensive environmental monitoring in coastal areas. Can you elaborate on the work you carried out during this research? The project focused on developing the multiparameter...
